On March 22, 2007,
the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto
played host to the third annual SEDI Awards. Hosted by CBC
anchor Suhana Meharchand, it is an event that celebrates
low and moderate income Canadians who have overcome personal
adversity to gain economic self-sufficiency. Five award
winners from across the country were honored for their personal
and professional accomplishments. Over 350 people were on
hand to hear their inspirational messages
Attendees heard from
the keynote speaker Patrick Sullivan, CEO of Workopolis,
who spoke about individual self worth and the Canadian job
market. Paralympian and motivational speaker Jeff Adams,
City TV personality and news hound Mark Dailey, Financial
Editor of the Toronto Sun Linda Leatherdale, and Deputy
Chief of Police of Toronto Keith Forde were also on hand
to congratulate the award winners. Juno award winning artist
Brenda MacIntyre and Toronto recording artist Joanne Dinardo
provided musical entertainment.
The event raised
money to continue the work of SEDI in the area of program
development and policy advocacy. SEDI attempts to ensure
that low and moderate income Canadians have access to the
services and programs they need to reach their full potential.
Thank you to everyone who came to the event to share in the
celebration and to pay tribute to SEDI's work. We look
forward to seeing you all again in 2008.
